Kazakhstan coal mine incident’s death toll reaches 42

(MENAFN) The authorities in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region reported on Sunday that the death toll resulting from a fire at a coal mine has tragically increased to 42 individuals.

The Emergency Situations Ministry announced in a statement that "as of 15:00 (0900GMT), the bodies of 42 dead were found, and the search for 4 miners continues." The ministry mentioned that rescue and search efforts were still in progress as well.

On the late evening of Friday, a devastating fire erupted at the Kostenko coal mine, which is managed by ArcelorMittal, a globally recognized multinational steel manufacturing corporation headquartered in Luxembourg. This coal mine incident unfolded with approximately 252 workers present at the site at the time.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took swift action, issuing a directive to terminate all cooperation between the Kazakh government as well as the ArcelorMittal group.

In addition, in a somber tribute to the victims of the coal mine fire, Leader Tokayev declared October 29th as a national day of mourning.
