Japan To Provide USD 5 Mln For Humanitarian Aid In Sudan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, June 16 (KUNA) -- Japan decided on Friday to extend USD 5 million in emergency grant aid for humanitarian assistance in Sudan, the Japanese Foreign Ministry announced.
The aid is to provide assistance as food, non-food items, health and medical care through international organizations in response to further deterioration of humanitarian situation caused by the conflict between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces since April, as well as the ongoing lack of improvement in the security situation, the ministry said in a press release.
Of the amount, USD 2 million will be disbursed through UN World Food Programme (WFP) for food and logistics, USD 1.3 million will be used for health and medical care and other items through International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the rest will be used by three other international organizations, according to the ministry.
In addition, the government will provide USD 1.46 million in grant aid through Japanese NGOs in Sudan and neighboring Chad.
"The humanitarian assistance above-mentioned is to be implemented on the basis of the fact that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida conveyed the message that he would work closely together on the response to the situation in the Sudan during his visit to Africa in May, and that the Group of Seven (G-7) leaders confirmed their commitments to support Sudan in the G-7 Hiroshima Summit," the ministry said.
"Japan, in close coordination with related countries, will continue its effort for early ceasefire of both parties, and humanitarian response in Sudan," it added. (end)
