(MENAFN) A young moose caused a stir when it walked into the Providence Alaska Medical Center, the largest hospital in Anchorage, on Thursday. Video footage shared on social media showed the moose munching on plants in the lobby nonchalantly as security guards approached it. One witness expressed amazement, saying, "There's a moose in our hospital, guys. It's just chilling. Hungry." The incident took place at around 3:30 pm local time. Though such wildlife sightings are common on the hospital campus, there is no protocol for when a moose enters a building, according to Mikal Canfield, a Providence Alaska spokesperson.
Canfield stated that moose often visit the hospital throughout the year, and an occasional bear is seen during the summer months. However, this is the first time in recent memory that a moose has entered the building. The security team managed to coax the moose back outside after moving furniture around. A few people cheered when the moose exited through the automatic doors. After finding a patch of grass, it settled down for a nap, according to Canfield.
This isn't the first time a moose has wandered into an Anchorage hospital. In January 2019, a similar incident occurred at Alaska Regional Hospital. Recently, CBS Anchorage affiliate KYES reported that a woman was stunned to find a moose munching on plants inside her home after leaving the door open slightly while letting her dog out.
While moose are generally perceived as friendly and gentle creatures, they can become dangerous at times. During the fall mating season, moose may be aggressive toward humans. Moose with young calves are very protective during late spring and summer and will attack humans who come too close. Additionally, moose perceive dogs as a threat. Officials warn that more people are injured by moose than by bears in Alaska each year.
The incident at the hospital has brought attention to the dangers of encountering wildlife in urban areas. It is crucial to stay alert and cautious, especially when wildlife sightings are common in the area. The authorities have requested the public to remain vigilant and to report any unusual animal activity immediately to avoid any potential harm.
