Doha: The students of Global Academy International (GAI) in Qatar (Thumama Branch) visited the newspaper's office as part of the 'Writing Enrichment Programme', and met with the Editor-in-Chief of The Peninsula, Dr. Khalid Al-Shafi, yesterday.
Riyam Chaar, Academic Controller at Global Academy International, accompanied the students. They toured the newspaper office and were briefed about the functions of different sections of the daily publication. The enthusiastic youngsters also learned about the newspaper's editorial policy regarding local and international news coverage, placement of stories on the page, layout and design styles.
At the Digital Desk, the students were enlightened about the paper's online presence. They were introduced to The Peninsula's website and social media platforms. They got first-hand information alongside live data-tracking to show the massive online following among the people in Qatar and other parts of the world.
During the tour, the students eagerly inquired about how reporters cover events, how news articles are selected and how the editorial section handles slow news days.
Meanwhile, Chaar explained that the Writing Enrichment Programme enables the selection of gifted kids from grades 6 to 8 (Middle School category) for trips to different organisations and entities such as Qatar Museums, media houses, factories, etc.“This programme coincides with the Ministry of Education and Higher Educations' vision of serving quality education,” she added. She expressed thanks and appreciation to the Editor-in-Chief for facilitating the visit.
According to Chaar, a student's writing skills, critical-thinking ability, comprehension, and interests are evaluated after such educational trips. She added that the students' views regarding their trip and observation are examined by their writing - content and other mechanics.
“This trip is a great help to our project, for which I express my gratitude to the Editor-in-Chief and the newspaper staff who shared their expertise, enriching students' knowledge and understanding of the print media. Now through their writings, they will reflect on their experience,” she added.
