EU representative seeks to build UN support for court to prosecute Russian conflict crimes in Ukraine

(MENAFN) The European Union's diplomat to the United Nations has stated the 27-member bloc stands with the creation of an independent court that would hold Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top officials blamed for the attack of Ukraine, even if specialists believe it is a governmentally "risky move".

In an exclusive interview with The National, Olof Skoog declared EU officials would assemble in Brussels later this week to talk over the suggested tribunal, which would operate separately from the International Criminal Court, which Russia is not party to.

“It's very good that they [the Russian leadership] know that the prospect of indictments and punishment and, you know, accountability, is there as a reality,” Mr Skoog announced at UN headquarters in New York.

Ukraine has been pushing for the formation of a tribunal akin to the Nuremberg trials following the Second World War, when the Allies prosecuted beaten Nazis.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in November stated “Russia must pay for its horrific crimes” as she proclaimed the EU's support for the tribunal.
