Turbine failure occurs at largest nuclear reactor in EU nation

(MENAFN) The largest nuclear reactor in Sweden was shut down on Wednesday due to a turbine malfunction. The Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant in the country's south has seen three incidents so far this year.

According to the plant's operator, OKG, spokesperson Desiree Liljevall, the reactor is shortly going to be reactivated, “the issue that caused the shutdown has now been fixed.” Liljevall noted, “we know what has happened, but we can’t comment on it.”

One of the three operational nuclear power plants in the nation is the Oskarshamn facility. The largest generator of power in Sweden is its reactor. Due to a fuel leak, the reactor was previously shut down for a week in February and again for a day in July.

The two remaining reactors of the facility ceased operation in the 2010s as Europe made the move to a "green economy’" and other energy sources.

Nevertheless, the severe energy crisis and the high rate of inflation forced other nations, including Germany, to reconsider their use of nuclear energy and postpone the shutdown of their remaining units.
