Doha: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah revealed the launch of a global campaign to recall the centrality and universality of human rights and the role and value of independent national human rights institutions.

She said that the Alliance's launch of the Global Action Plan for Human Rights Defenders and Civic Space is to support coalition members around the world and protect human rights defenders and civic space, including addressing threatening situations against NHRIs.

She noted that the GANHRI is strengthening its role in conveying its collective voice in the field of human rights to the United Nations, in close cooperation with the United Nations Development Program.

This came during a series of intensive meetings held by Al Attiyah as GANHRI President at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The meetings included H E Jane Francis Connors, Assistant Secretary-General, United Nations Victims' Rights Advocate, and H E Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The meetings with senior UN officials are expected to continue throughout this week.

During her meeting with Connors, Al Attiyah said:“Many of our members are still building their capabilities and many are at risk and need protection. We continue to engage in support of national human rights institutions that are at risk or under threat, including in Afghanistan, El Salvador, Georgia, Guatemala, the Philippines, Ukraine and many similar cases in other countries.”

She explained that the Global Alliance has developed its partnerships with the Office of Victims' Rights Lawyers at the United Nations to determine how national human rights institutions can support the rights of victims, and at the same time welcomed the activation of cooperation, exchange of developments
and exploring ways of cooperation.

“I am delighted with the partnership between the Global Alliance and the Office of Victims' Lawyers at the United Nations, and we are ready to support victims' rights through our member national institutions around the world. It has pledged to work to continue building partnership and cooperation, share messages publicly, and involve national institutions that are members of the Global Alliance in the work that they can do at national levels in their countries.”
