Kremlin: Putin participates in military drills with Chinese forces

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has participated in large-scale military activities involving Chinese forces and the militaries of a number of Russia-friendly countries, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The Vostok-2022 (East 2022) joint military exercises started on September 1st, amid Russia's war in Ukraine and as both Moscow and Beijing face tensions with the US.

Putin was at the Sergeevski military range on Tuesday to meet with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Military Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, according to Peskov, and would observe the final phase of the military exercises.

The drills, which include troops from several ex-Soviet countries as well as China, India, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua, and Syria, have been personally overseen by General Gerasimov.

More than 50,000 soldiers and 5,000 military units, including 140 aircraft and 60 ships, are taking part in the exercises, which are taking place across several training grounds in Russia's Far East and in the waters off its eastern coast until Wednesday.
