New UK prime minister to be announced

(MENAFN) On Monday, the winner of the campaign to succeed Boris Johnson as the next head of the governing Conservative Party and the future prime minister of the United Kingdom is going to be announced. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss or former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak are the two candidates. Recent surveys indicate that members of the Tory party overwhelmingly favor Britain's top diplomat.

Tuesday is anticipated to be Johnson's goodbye speech and resignation announcement to the Queen, who would then formally choose either Truss or Sunak as his replacement. Johnson is going to continue in office until the transition of power is finished, but the incoming British prime minister would then assemble a government.

Johnson resigned as leader of the Conservative Party on July 7 after more than 50 associates of parliament left his administration within 48 hours. Johnson was responsible for leading Britain out of the European Union and his party to a resounding election win in 2019. It came after a string of high-profile scandals, including Johnson's appointment of a politician accused of sexual misconduct as his deputy chief whip and an internal investigation earlier this year that revealed that cabinet members, including the prime minister himself, routinely violated their own Covid-19 social distancing rules.
