Afghan evacuees in UAE criticize sluggish relocation process
(MENAFN) Since being evacuated from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in August 2021, hundreds of Afghans residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have protested, calling for the expediting of what they perceive to be a cumbersome and long resettlement procedure.
According to Reuters, which cited two Afghan residents there, the Afghan demonstrators on Monday and Tuesday hoisted banners and yelled for relief inside the Abu Dhabi facility housing them.
In anticipation of their resettlement in the United States or other nations, they calculated that thousands of Afghans were still residing in the temporary accommodation.
“Nearly one year, we have been here in detention and the camp is like a modern prison. No one is allowed to go out, they don’t know when (we) will be settled permanently to any country,” one Afghan who refused to be identified, informed a news agency.
Images and video captured protests by kids and adults inside the Emirates Humanitarian City building.
One young man carried a tiny sign that read, "One year is enough!"
In a gesture against what some Afghans claimed were prison-like circumstances in the institution, some screamed "we want justice" while wearing blindfolds that read "freedom," and others shackled their wrists, according to video seen by the news agency.
