Police Books Geelani Family Under UAPA

Srinagar: Police Saturday booked family members and relatives of late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Police sources said that an FIR number 227/ 2021 under section 353 of Indian penal code, 13 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was registered at police station Budgam against the family members, relatives and other 'miscreants' who created unlawful activities on September 1-2 night after the death of Geelani in his house.
Police sources said the family members were seen“raising anti-national slogans” and“resorted to other anti-national activities like placing a Pakistani flag on his body”.
They said further investigation of the matter has been set into motion.
Geelani, 92, passed away on Wednesday evening at his Hyderpora residence after prolonged illness. The family members had alleged that police snatched the body of Geelani in the dead of the night and buried him hastily, a charge refuted by the police. A video showing family members, mostly women, putting up resistance to police intervention and a Pakistani flag over the body of Geelani has gone viral on social media.
However, police in a statement issued later rejected the allegations and said that police instead lend a helping hand in the burial.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said the family members of Geelani misbehaved with the Senior Superintendent of Police and other policemen.“There was a lot of anti-national sloganeering and attempts to instigate people,” the DGP said.
