Iraq: Assault leaves 3 security members, IS rebel dead in Anbar
(MENAFN) An army source stated that on Friday, Jul. 23 an overall of three security members and a rebel of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group were confirmed dead in an IS assault on a military base in Iraqi western province of Anbar.
An army officer in the province said to Xinhua on condition of remaining anonymous said that the assault occurred in the early morning when IS rebels assaulted a base for the Iraqi army and paramilitary Sunni tribal fighters, provoking a fight close to the town of al-Rutba, around 450 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
According to the source, the assault led to the death of two soldiers and a tribal fighter and the injuring of two soldiers, whereas an IS rebel also died in the confrontation.
After support troops reached the scene, the assailants pulled out to a close desert, the source further said.
