My research focuses on understanding cell biology using mathematics. The particular problems that I am interested in are related to understanding and controlling the behaviour of biological cells, from bacteria all the way to complex multicellular organisms, including humans. Applications include the processes by which a stem cell gives rise to differentiated cells in developmental biology and regenerative medicine; and modelling the dynamics of cellular systems, including whole cells in order to get better designs for synthetic biology.

The mathematical and statistical approaches that I am using can be applied beyond biology. I am especially interested in the analysis and modelling of complex networks, including social networks. Here one of the problems is that data are often noisy and incomplete, and my work helps with reconstructing and analysing processes on networks in a robust manner.
