Afghanistan- Prison Riot Claims 8, Wounds 11 in Herat


(MENAFN- Khaama Press) HERAT, Afghanistan – At least eight prisoners were killed and 12 further wounded in Herat prison riot, according to local health officials, which started Wednesday evening until midnight.

The riot started after police began clearing some partitions created by prisoners in Block 5 of Herat Prison, said Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai, spokesman for provincial public health directorate, as media reported .

Soon after the violence, the victims were rushed to the nearby hospital for immediate care, he said. 

Jailani Farhad, a spokesman for the Provincial governor, said the situation is under police control, while the case is being further investigated.  

Meanwhile, source said the prisoners have torched Block 5, amid violence among inmates that lasted until midnight of Wednesday.
