Srinagar: At a time when social media is flooded with misinformation over the coronavirus pandemic, three young Kashmiri students have created a webpage that provides crucial information about the infection and its spread in Valley along with geographical location.
The idea came up on March 24 when three young students Mudasir Ali, Haider Ali Punjabi and Vikas Bukhari were interacting over a social micro blogging website about the coronavirus pandemic. This is when the trio decided to create covidkashmir.org on the lines of covidindia.org and other informative websites on coronavirus.
'Barely minutes after the idea came up, we started working on the project. We decided to make a full-fledged website that will provide adequate information to the people. District-wise break down of covid-19 cases, map, and the daily updates on coronavirus cases were the main features of the tracker,' says Mudasir Ali, an MCA student and one of the team members.
On the evening of March 25, Ali says the webpage was launched on trial basis on a sub-domain with basic features. Next day, the three students purchased the domain covidkashmir.org and launched the tracker on it with further modifications.
'In two days, we completed this project. We had a purpose to provide authentic information to the people and ward off the rumours. And to a larger extent, we have been able to do so,' says Ali, who works as a freelance web designer as well.
The tracker, Ali told Kashmir Observer relies mostly on the information provided by the official sources and no data is picked up from secondary sources like news portals or newspapers.
Apart from the coronavirus cases, the website also provides detailed information about doctors, their contact numbers; helpline numbers established by government and has dedicated sections of frequently asked questions and myth busters. The website has received around 1lakh visits since it was launched.
'We will keep on adding more features to the tracker. We are in a process of making a danger meter to keep a check on community spread. We will see how to go about it,' Ali said.
