The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Egypt Office announced the opening of the scholarship programme for African countries at Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) starting from September 2020, under the collaboration of the Egyptian and Japanese governments.
This scholarship programme is meant to promote and cultivate Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for the coming generation who will contribute to the development of African countries, a topic raised at the 'Yokohama Plan of Actions 2019' during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) in August 2019.
Therefore, E-JUST will increase the number of seats for African students via cost sharing between Egypt and Japan through JICA Technical Cooperation.
E-JUST was established in 2010 in New Borg El Arab City, Alexandria, through bilateral agreement between the governments of Egypt and Japan. The Japanese government has been implementing technical cooperation projects through JICA. With the cooperation of Japanese Cooperation Universities (13 universities as of January 2020), JICA is supporting the establishment and operation of schools by providing practical engineering education, lab education, and leading seminars.
Also, E-JUST has received 27 international students from African countries in order to be the centre of excellence for higher education and advanced research not only in Egypt, but also in the Middle East and Africa. Furthermore, E-JUST has opened its main campus in fall 2019 and is still evolving in order to be the top university in Egypt with the efforts of both governments.
Enrollment in this scholarship programme will start in September 2020, and is planning to receive 150 spectacular students from all over Africa at E-JUST post-graduate schools.
The objective of the programme is to develop high quality human resources in the field of STI toward future African STI networks and beyond, the statement assured, noting that it will accept 150 students over three years distributed through several batches.
Applicants should be under 30 years old on 1 September 2020 and shall be researchers or instructors who belong to universities or research institutions in Africa and who need to obtain M.Sc. degree, or top-tier undergraduate students who are expected to be researchers or instructors by those universities.
The online application submission starts on 16 January 2020 and will close on 15 February 2020. Class enrollment of the first batch will be in September 2020.
