Pakistan- AC Gul Bano a role model for girls in Bannu

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) BANNU: The success and achievements of Gul Bano, the only woman in the Pakistan Administrative Services (PAS) from Bannu, paved the way for girls in the under-developed region to get education and leave their mark.

Gul Bano after passing the CSS exam with distinction is now a days serving as Assistant Commissioner in Mardan - the first woman on the coveted post during the last 50 years. Gul Bano says administrative posts are now wide-open for women officers. She said a large number of people and well-wishers from her native town Bannu visit her routinely to get guidance about educating their girls.

She said the number of male officers in the administrative services from Bannu is also very low. She said there may be hardly four or five such male officers from Bannu.

'I am the first female PAS officer from Bannu as no other woman from the area qualified for this post. No woman has served in provincial services either since the creation of Pakistan,' she said.

The situation in Bannu was not ideal after which the parents of Gul Bano decided to move to Peshawar. However, they frequently visited their home in Bannu which helped Gul Bano to get acquainted with the culture and social issues of both the cities. Her father was an employee in Education Department. He was a professor, while Gul Bano's mother was a schoolteacher. Due to strong educational background of parents, Gul Bano was fortunate to get an environment like that of a library at home and she started reading books available at home brought by her parents. She said she was fortunate that her parents were associated with the field of education which proved greatly beneficial for them.

Gul Bano got her initial education from University Model School Peshawar after which she passed the intermediate exam from Jinnah College for Women. After that she got MBA degree from the University of Peshawar.

Gul Bano said that with dedication and hard work and support of parents, girls can achieve any feat. She said she passed the CSS exam one year after her marriage and the family members and relatives were so impressed. She said many in the family and relatives got inspiration from her to sit in the CSS exam.

She said she was first appointed in Kohat, then in Khanpur and now in Mardan. She said the response of the people towards a female assistant commissioner is amazing and they are fully cooperating with her. She said in a conservative society like Bannu, people call her Fakhr-e-Bannu and take inspiration from her success and ask their daughters to follow my footsteps, which is the greatest achievement for her.
