(MENAFN- Asia Times) As many as 2.65 million Chinese citizens were last month barred from catching planes or high-speed trains as they were not permitted to buy tickets due to having too low a social credit score, according to the latest statistics from the government.
On August 16, Meng Wei, a spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), talked about the commission's latest findings on the nationwide social credit system, the China News reported.
As of the end of July, there were a total of 37 billion messages on the National Credit Information Sharing Platform, 197 million of which belonged to Credit China, made up of 156 million administrative permission notices and 40.63 million administrative penalties.
A total of 698,800 counts of discredited incidents involving 639,200 individuals were flagged on the social credit system across the country.
The number of discredited individuals subject to enforcement penalties on the credit blacklist maintained by China's courts reached 330,000 as of the end of July. About 2.56 million travelers were barred from buying plane tickets and 90,000 passengers were not allowed to buy tickets for high-speed trains.
Meanwhile, another 150,000 discredited people took the initiative to surrender themselves before authorities took legal action.
