The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Cambodia has said in a statement that a dolphin of extinct species has been killed after getting stuck in illegal fishing net in Cambodia's Kratie district, according to Xinhua.

The statement said that the dolphin was a male with a length of 198-cm and a weight of 104 kg, it was aged between 15-18 years.

Authorities announced on Monday that "The carcass has been collected and stored in a fridge at WWF Office in the province for necropsy purpose," and "The joint research team of Fisheries Administration and WWF primarily assessed that the cause of the death is gillnets since there are some gillnet marks on its tail."

That dolphin was the fifth to be found dead since January of 2019, with a total of 9 babies being born during the same period, according to the statement.

The statement also said that "Illegal fishing nets in the conservation zones are the main cause of Mekong dolphin's death," followed by "We are urging people not to do any illegal fishing activities in the conservation zones to protect this national living treasure for our country and next generations."
