546 FETO suspects nabbed before fleeing to Greece since '16

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, May 16 (KUNA) -- Since the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, the Turkish police have captured 546 suspects linked to Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) while trying to cross the borders into Greece.
The Turkish soldiers stationed on the Turkish side of the Greek and Bulgarian borders prevented the suspects from escaping to Europe, Turkey's Anadolu Agency reported on Thursday.
The suspects, placed under travel ban, include ex-soldiers, academics, teachers, police officers and judges.
The security forces arrested 18 suspects in 2016, 149 in 2017 and 266 in 2018 in addition to 113 suspects who were arrested since the beginning of this year, AA said, citing data of the provincial gendarmerie command.
The suspects caught near the Greece and Turkey border included Halil Kumcu, who is believed to have abducted former Gendarmerie head Gen. Galip Mendi in June 2017.
FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.
Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary. (end)
