Sudan appoints new head of transitional council

(MENAFN- Nam News Network) KHARTOUM, April 13 (NNN-ANADOLU) - Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Burhan on Friday became the new head of the transitional military council in Sudan, which has been rocked by a military coup.

Earlier in the day, Defense Minister Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf announced his resignation from the council on state TV and named Burhan as his successor.

The move came less than 24 hours after the army seized power in Sudan.

Despite the declaration of a curfew Thursday, thousands of protestors gathered in the streets of the capital, including near the General Staff Headquarters, calling for the resignation of Ibn Auf and those affiliated with Omar al-Bashir, the longtime Sudanese leader who stepped down after the coup.

In a written statement, trade associations said the protestors would not fall back without "fully toppling the regime" and until a "transitional civilian government" took over.

On Apr. 11, Ibn Auf said the army had seized power and announced a two-year transitional period.

Millions of people took to the streets Friday to celebrate after Ibn Auf announced he was stepping down.
