Kuwait- Amricani ctr hosts RIBA President's Medal Exhibition


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, April 7 (KUNA) -- The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President's Medal Exhibition has kicked off at the Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah of the Amricani Cultural Centre.
"Its a pleasure to host this exhibition for the second year in row," Director General of Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah Sheikha Hessa Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah told reporters Sunday on the sidelines of the exhibition's inaugural ceremony.
"This event provides a distinguished platform for showing the creativity of future architects and architecture in Kuwait." For his part, Dean of the College of Architecture at Kuwait University Dr. Omar Khattab noted that the exhibition shed lights on the role of architecture in creating urban environment. It also displays works of talented architecture students from across the globe, he stated.
Khattab hoped students of his college will participate in the next edition of the exhibition and vie for its medals.
Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah hosts the RIBA President's Medal Exhibition, for the second year in a row, during the period from the 7th - 25th April at the Amricani Cultural Centre.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards the RIBA President's Medals annually as a way to celebrate and promote excellence in the study of architecture, reward talent and encourage architectural debate worldwide.
First awarded in 1836, the President's Medals are the RIBA's oldest awards (preceding the Royal Gold Medal, established in 1848) and are regarded as the most prestigious prizes in architectural education worldwide.
In 2018, the RIBA invited a record 376 schools of architecture in 74 countries to submit one dissertation for the RIBA Dissertation Medal, up to two design projects for the RIBA Bronze Medal, and up to two design projects for the RIBA Silver Medal.
The entries were judged anonymously over three days in September and October 2018 by three independent panels comprising architects, academics, designers and artists.
After viewing thousands of images, hundreds of portfolios, and dozens of films, the judges agreed the Medal winners and Commendations in each category.
RIBA in partnership with the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, Kuwait University and Pace | Architecture, Engineering + Planning has successfully developed an exhibition to feature the winning projects and a selection of entries submitted by schools of architecture across the world for the 2018 awards.
Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah (DAI) is a cultural organization based around the private art collection owned by Sheikh Nasser Sabah al Ahmed al Sabah, founder of The al Sabah Collection and his wife, DAI director general and co-founder Sheikha Hussa Sabah al Salem al Sabah.
Since its inception in 1983, DAI has grown from a single focus organization created to manage the loan of the prestigious al Sabah Collection of art from the Islamic world to the State of Kuwait to become an internationally recognized cultural organization. (end) hjb.ibi
