Manila to permit workers in Libya to return after home visits

(MENAFN- Asia Times) Filipino migrant workers who return from Libya on vacation will be exempted from the current ban on working there, and allowed to return to work after their vacation.

In a statement , the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it has asked the Department of Labor and Employment to allow more Filipinos to return home for vacations without having to lose their jobs in Libya. Filipino migrant workers with valid and existing contracts will be exempted from the current ban on working in Libya.

In September, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration imposed a total ban on newly-hired workers going to Libya due to the escalation of violence in the country.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said the ban was imposed as the safety and security of Filipino workers may be put at serious risk. The DFA raised the alert level to Level 3 due to the ongoing violence.

'We could lower it once we are satisfied that the security situation has stabilized and no longer exposes our people to risks,' Locsin said in September.

The DFA announced that Filipinos covered by the exemption must submit a copy of their employment contract and a letter from their employer requesting their return and an undertaking guaranteeing their safety and security.

'Filipino workers and their next of kin are also required to submit a sworn statement acknowledging the risks involved in working in Libya and the limited capability of the Philippine Embassy to assist them during emergencies or contingencies,' the DFA said.

Filipino workers must have their documents verified by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Tripoli before they return to the Philippines.
