Popularity

Since its launch in December 1985, the Gypsy has been a favorite among off-road enthusiasts and rally drivers alike.

The car has also been a favorite for several government agencies, and the Indian Army for decades.

90% of all Gypsies sold go to government agencies, the police, or the military, while the rest are bought by individuals for recreational purposes.

Evolution

Over the years, the Gypsy has received little to no cosmetic changes, but has undergone some changes under the hood.

In 1993, the car was upgraded to feature 90mm wider front and rear tracks, and in 1996, it got the all-aluminium 1.3-liter engine from the Maruti Suzuki Esteem.

In its current morph, it sports a 1.3-liter MPFI BS4 engine, in accordance with emission standards.

Currently, the Gypsy, with its 1.3-liter MPFI BS4 petrol engine, offers 80bhp of horsepower, and 103Nm of torque.

The car is available in its standard, four-wheel drive variant, and comes either with a removable canvas top, or with a factory-fitted hard top.

That said, the car offers no creature comforts and does not sport luxuries like air conditioning and power steering.
