Oman- Over 99,000 outpatient cases received by Al Nahdha Hospital last year

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The outpatient clinic in Al Nahdha Hospital last year received around 99,836 patients in various departments.

This was revealed by Dr Kamra bint Saeed, director of Al Nahdha Hospital.

Dr Kamra was talking about the hospital's achievements in the past 45 years through the efforts of its employees, most notably in corneal transplantation and specialised surgeries of the head, throat and teeth.

'The hospital receives about 100,000 cases annually, and the number of surgeries conducted has increased during the past five years by more than 40 per cent, with about 8,640 operations being conducted during the past year,' she said.

The doctors perform about 800 to 900 surgeries monthly, and on a daily average of 35 operations in six major operating rooms, she added.

Dr Kamra said the corneal transplant service at Al Nahdha has started after a temporary stoppage since April 2017.

'The Department of Ophthalmology at Al Nahdha Hospital began to re-implement the corneal transplantation to patients who suffer from corneal opacity.

'After the interruption of this service for a period during which patients were sent out, it started thanks to the efforts of doctors in the department, hospital management and the Ministry of Health officials who have helped in conducting these operations again.'

Al Nahdha offers treatment for citizens suffering from opacity in the cornea, conical cornea. It also offers corneal transplantation.

It is expected that such operations in the sultanate will help reduce the number of cases gradually, which in turn will provide relief to patients and the families.

Majority of the patients are elderly and after the process they need to stay for a while in the hospital to receive care and treatment.

To improve the level of medical services provided in the field of ophthalmology and also contribute greatly to enriching the field, clinical training for ophthalmologists is provided by the Oman Medical Specialty Board.

Dr Kamra said that Al Nahdha Hospital has a contract with the American Eye Bank to provide corneal tissue.

On the latest statistics, Dr Kamra explained that the outpatient clinic in the hospital last year received around 99,836 patients in various departments with about 700 patients or more every day.

The examinations are performed in the ophthalmology department, besides the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) section, followed by dental, jaw surgery and skin.

'The emergency last year received about 60,000 cases with most cases in the departments of general emergencies, ophthalmology, etc. Eighty per cent of the surgeries are day care cases.'

The hospital has specialised medical staff and latest equipment in the operating rooms.

Dr Kamra said the hospital adopts a culture of quality improvement that helps to create an encouraging and competitive environment between institutions.
