Unnao rape: CBI confirms MLA raped woman, Police protected him
11 May 2018

The CBI has confirmed rape charges against Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was accused of raping a woman in 2017.

It has also confirmed police's role: local cops had initially refused to file a chargesheet against Sengar, and tried to dislodge the probe.

The case gained major attention due to severe abuse of power by influential individuals.

Case grabbed headlines in April after a suicide attempt
Case

The case made headlines last month when the victim and her family tried to kill themselves outside CM Yogi Adityanath's house.

She alleged she had reported the crime several times, but no action was taken against Sengar.

It turned murkier when police instead arrested her father for the 'illegal' suicide attempt, but he was found dead in custody next day.

Sengar's brother was arrested.

What does the CBI probe reveal?
CBI

CBI sources told TOI the victim had been lured by Sengar's aide Shashi Singh on June 4 on the pretext of giving her a job.

Sengar then raped her at his home in Makhi while Singh, a woman, stood guard outside.

On June 11, she was abducted by three men, including Singh's son, who moved around with her in an SUV while repeatedly gangraping her.

Role of police: Cops helped dislodge probe against Sengar
Police

When she finally approached police on June 20, local cops were "reluctant" to file an FIR.

When they eventually did, they kept out Sengar, Singh and few other names. Only the three abductors' names featured in the August chargesheet.

They also delayed her medical examination and didn't send her clothes and vaginal swab to forensics.

Sources confirmed this was in connivance with the accused.

Who were trying to protect Sengar?
Pressure

Preliminary CBI investigations had revealed that several high-profile politicians, bureaucrats and cops were involved in shielding Sengar.

So much so that police ignored even the CMO's instructions to take action.

Sengar's aides also visited Makhi village recently and threatened people not to speak up against the MLA.

The CBI is likely to summon these leaders too.

Victim's statement to be submitted as evidence
Status

The case had been handed over to the CBI after a hue and cry about political pressure on the police; UP Police had acted only recently, after the DSP, local SHO and four constables were suspended.

The agency arrested Sengar, Singh and others in April and questioned them at length.

The CBI has also recorded the victim's statement, which is admissible as evidence.
