Oman- Caribou Chats features two successful local entrepreneurs

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Startup Oman (www.startupoman.om), the sultanate's only platform created by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs and the 'home of entrepreneurship' in Oman, recently hosted February's edition of Caribou Chats.

Caribou Chats is an educational programme designed specifically for Oman's startup community. It aims to fully promote the entrepreneurial lifestyle, with all of its daily hurdles and learnings.

Speaking on the Startup Oman stage was Abbas al Lawati, founder of Humour Infection, a local comedy group which is the first group to represent Oman on an international stage in terms of comedy. Lawati is the second runner-up at the Short and Sweet comedy festival, runner-up at the Dubai Comedy Festival and winner of Beat the Gong, which is Dubai's most brutal comedy night.

Joining Lawati was Kaleem Mohammed al Yaqooby, entrepreneur, founder and group CEO of GEE, established in 2008, offering diverse retail products, projects and services.

Yaqooby previously held the position of programme manager for Information Technology and E-Business Projects at Bank Muscat. During his service in the banking industry, he was involved in a number of nationwide trendsetting changes by delivering innovative projects. He revolutionised government agency payment systems by helping them adopt cashless methods of payment.

Lawati said 'Signing my resignation was really scary for me and I heard a lot comments from people around me about how I should live my life. Then, there's the fact that the Omani entertainment market is a small one.'

Yaqooby said, 'An entrepreneur will most likely to be the one taking care of a lot of aspects of his business for a very long time. He'll have to learn the different skills required in order for him to get successful. My wish is to see everyone able to use technology. If Silicon Valley is ready to go to India and Malaysia, I don't think that we're missing something that keeps us away from such a level.'

'Having Lawati as a speaker provided immense value to our programme and he gave some really good insights on the comedy industry both around the world and in the region. Caribou Chats is designed to showcase successful local entrepreneurs, and we're very pleased to have hosted him this month. This time, we also hosted Yaqooby, whose experience in entrepreneurship is admirable,' said Ali Daud, co-founder of Startup Oman.

The next Caribou Chats will be on March 14 at 6.30pm at Caribou Cafe in Bareeq al Shatti. Registration is required at mymujtama.startupoman.om.
