(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubai airports' new smart gates now detect suspicious luggage faster than before.
Khaled Ahmed Yousuf, the airport's smart gate inventor,has invented a new method to identify bags and suitcases carrying possible illegal items, Al Bayan reported.
Yousuf said that with over 83 million travellers travelling to Dubai, it's a challenge to quickly check all luggages, hence we needed a new easier system of checking luggage - in turn delighting passengers.

Explaining how the gate works, Yousuf said that an electronic chip was placed on bags to track and differentiate those with illegal contents from the others - so that authorities could check them without disrupting the checking procedure and wasting travellers' time.
The report doesn't specify how the chip is concealed or placed, but it 'self destructs' after passing the gate.

The inventor added that the smart gate also did a baggage counts, in turn reducing operating costs. He explained that there are 25 gates that have been established in Dubai's airports. The number of gates would be increased according to the need, he noted.
"The smart gates had reduced the baggage inspection time to a few seconds - in the case that there are no illegal contents - also speeding up the process of detecting and seizing illegal items, leading to the arrest of violators," he added.
