Rich haul for Qatar at Asian Indoor Championships

Doha: Qatar culminated their outstanding run at the 8th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, bagging two more medals including a gold and a silver medal on the final day of the event at Aftab-e Enqelab Sports Complex in Tehran, Iran yesterday.

According to information made available here, team Qatar claimed medals in men's 4x400 relay and men's 1500m race to end the three-day competition on a high note.

The final gold of the championships for Qatar came from the men's 4x400 relay team which defeated a strong line-up to win the competition. They finished the distance in 3:10.08, overcoming Kazakhstan (3:11.68) and hosts Iran (3:11.74) who finished in second and third positions respectively.

Yaser Saleem Bagharab won the silver medal after finishing the men's 1,500m race in 3:53.92, just fractions of second behind Iran's Amir Moradi who won gold medal with a time of 3:53.78. Moslem Niadoost of Iran won the bronze medal after clocking 3:53.99.

Qatar won as many as 11 medals including five gold medals during the three-day championships which saw top athletes from several Asian nations.

On Friday the second day of the championship the Qatari athletes won three medals taking the country's medals tally to nine. The stars of the day were Abubaker Haydar Abdalla and Abdalelah Haroun who pocketed gold medals in the 800m and 400m races. The third podium finisher for Qatar was Mohammed Nasser, who won the bronze in 400m.

Qatari superstar, Mutaz Essa Barshim laid the foundation for his team's fine run with a gold medal on the opening day, setting a new championship record of 2.38m and world leading mark in his season opener. It was Barshim's fifth consecutive Asian Indoor title at the venue where he had won his first title in 2010.

'It's the second time I'm in Iran and Iran is a good place. I'm happy to win the gold medal, it's a very good feeling, Barshim said in an interview to Athletics Federation of Iran.

'I hope in the future I set higher records, God willing, he added.

Dr Thani al Kuwari, President of the Qatar Athletics Federation, congratulated the medal winners for the country and praised their dedication.

He stressed that the achievements of the promising young generation of athletes were the fruit of the support of Qatar's wise leadership who spare no effort to provide all the support for their success.

Mohammed al Fadala, Secretary-General of the Qatar Athletics Federation, said the Qatar athletes' participation in the tournament is part of Qatar's plans to prepare for the upcoming events, most notably the Muller Grand Prix in Birmingham, England in August.
