Referring to the current Gulf crisis and the siege imposed on Qatar, Al Shafi pointed out that there were many obstacles put by some countries which sought to undermine our progress and success, but their desperate attempts totally failed. 'The siege countries do not respect any customs, values and neighbourhood, he added.

Regarding Qatar-Turkey relations, Al Shafi said our historic bilateral relations 'have proved once again that through close cooperation we are capable of confronting challenges and achieving successes.

'We extend our thanks to both Turkish government and people for their continued support to Qatar, he added.

Hailing Qatar-Turkey relations, he stressed that 'we are proud of what we have achieved together within the past few years at all levels and we look for further in the future.

For his part, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said: 'In the name of the Turkish government and people, we congratulate Qatar on celebrating its National Day.

'Our relationship with Qatar is at its distinct level currently and it is experiencing great acceleration in the field of trade and investment from both countries, he added.

Simsek said that 2017 was full of challenges but by cooperation with Qatar they managed to foil all conspiracy plans and worked for peace in the region.

Simsek went on to note that through continuous communication between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Emir H H Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, relations between the two countries reached a high level in past years.

'We are confident that the Turkey-Qatar relations which are built on strong foundation will allow us to continue on the same path with a view to raise them in the future, he said.

Qatar's National Day is celebrated on December 18 every year as on the same date in 1878 Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father as the Emir and led the country towards full unity.
