ITA concludes 5th edition of Oman Summer of Code


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Information technology Authority (ITA) celebrated the conclusion of Oman Summer of Code 2017, at ITA's Sas Mobile Centre with the presence of Dr Salim bin Sultan al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA and a number of IT specialists, academics and professionals.

Fifty IT job seekers, students and professionals participated in the competition, and 12 have made it to the final phase, stated a press release.

After the evaluation, 'ITrans' app won as the best project and Network Monitoring System using 'Nagios' won the excellence award. A number of promising apps and projects have been honoured including Experience & on-job Training HUB and Inventory management system using Odoo.

The winner of best project, iTrans app developed by Ali al Rubkhi and Zainab al Kindi, is an integrated electronic platform for smart phones that provides e-Shopping and parcel services. It is initially designed for Android and it will be developed to support IOS later.
iTrans app allows users to purchase products online with good quality services. The purchase transaction can be performed either online or through cash on delivery.

The winner of the excellence award, Nagios system, developed by Waleed al Shekaili, is a free and open source software that monitors and controls all infrastructure components of data centre, including main server systems, network protocols and applications with a centralised user interface, through which all monitoring operations are presented in a single organised interface.

The fifth edition of 2017 Oman Summer of Code, which was organised from June 11 to November 5, is a national youth competition in the field of application development and IT solutions. It was launched by ITA in 2013 for the first time to encourage application developers in general, and applications based on open source software in particular to work on various projects using free and open source software to create applications that can be adopted in different work environments over a three-month period.

The programme also aims to help create job opportunities through self-employment by encouraging participants to establish small and medium IT enterprises.

The winner of the best mobile app will get the opportunity to attend a specialised conference in free and open source software in Singapore. In addition, all the winning and promising projects of this year will be incubated in Sas Centre for Entrepreneurship.
