(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Five talented Omani sailors including a girl have been named by Oman Sail to represent the sultanate at the 2017 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championships in Hong Kong from September 30-October 7.
The five – Al Moatasem al Farsi, Alla al Omrani, Mohammed al Qasmi, Mohammed al Alawi and the lone girl, Samiha al Riyami, – won their place in the national team after their top-level performance at the Oman National Championships earlier this year.
Besides Oman, the other countries participating in Hong Kong are Australia, Bermuda, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, South Korea, Myanmar, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, US and the host nation.
Ahead of their participation at the Hong Kong regatta, the five sailors will compete along with other young Omanis at the third Oman Sail Youth Ranking Race event of the year, which will be organised at the Oman Sail Mussanah Sailing School on Friday and Saturday.
Mussanah will also be the venue of the 2019 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championship after Oman had won the bid to host the event earlier in July in Thailand
At the Mussanah race event, all the participating sailors are aged between 10-17 years and are part of the Omantel-supported youth sailing programme running at the four sailing schools in Mussanah, Sur, Marina Bandar al Rowdha and Al Mouj, Muscat.
The races in Mussanah will be held in Optimist, Laser 4.7 and windsurfing classes.
'The Ranking Race allows us to monitor the development of our youth programme sailors,' said Oman Sail's youth manager Mohsin al Busaidi. 'It is also an opportunity for the sailors to test themselves against rivals from the other sailing schools.'
'The five sailors heading to Hong Kong for the Optimist championship have all come through our youth programme and is an example of what the Oman Sail initiative represents,' said Busaidi.
