Lights, camera, action: we're backing young talent in Udine

(MENAFN- Asia Times) The Far East film Festival (FEFF) in Udine, Italy has long championed the cause of commercial Asian cinema, helping introduce the likes of Stephen Chow, Johnnie To, Feng Xiaogang and Yojiro Takitato to an international audience.

More recently, the festival has introduced a Campus program that seeks to extend this connection between East and West by bringing together a group of aspiring journalists over the event's nine-day run, and allowing them to get 'inside' the film industry through seminars, workshops and interviews.

For this year's 19th edition of the FEFF – from April 21 to 29 – Asia Times is throwing its support behind the Campus. We're helping to sponsor five aspiring young Asian writers aged 26 or younger to spend two weeks working alongside five European counterparts at the festival.

'Asia Times has continued to support and explore the boundaries of Asian cinema – and the Campus once again reflects that Asian cinema really does reach the entire world,' said Campus co-ordinator Mathew Scott, also a regular contributor to Asia Times.

'What impressed us this year was just how creative the applicants were in terms of what they had already achieved. You could really feel how much this experience would mean to each of them.'

The successful candidates for the third edition of the FEFF Campus are: Asia – Natalie Ngai Tsz-lam (Hong Kong), Paige Lim (Singapore), Yuan Yingzi (China), Megumi Arita (Japan), Joshua Lim (Malaysia); Europe – David Pountain (UK), Maja Korbecka (Poland), Polina Zelmanova (Cyprus), Barbara Sorger (Austria), Francesco Franz (Italy).

As well as gaining insights into the film industry – and how to write about it – the interns will be filing for Asia Times across the event, with a daily diary, interviews and features to be posted on our Asian Film platform , our Facebook page and Instagram page.
