Two Omani inventors win silver at IIFME in Kuwait

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Two Omani inventors have brought recognition to the sultanate as their innovative product designs won silver medals at the 9th International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME), held recently in Kuwait.

The two have shown that one doesn't need to be backed by big corporations to showcase new technology but what is really needed is passion to excel and achieve what no other person has achieved.

Duhi bin Jamal bin Hilal al Barwani, an engineer, has invented a hydro-powered welding machine. The conventional ones use gas or electricity.

'It is a portable machine which can be easily transported. It works on water; there's no need for gas storage,' Barwani said.

He said the machine can be operated indoors as it does not emit toxic fumes or gases, as it uses renewable and clean energy. 'It has the ability to control the flame when welding with high electronic precision. It is environment-friendly and safe.'

Barwani also won a silver medal for his invention at International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva which was held in April 2014. Barwani said the big challenge is finding companies which are ready to adopt the project.

Another innovative concept that won recognition is Sitar Tsunami (breaker of mechanical waves in water), developed by Ahmad bin Hilal al Sinani, a businessman.

The coral reefs provide a physical barrier in the sea, causing waves to break offshore and allowing them to dissipate most of their energy.

Sinani's product also works on the same principle.

He said the idea was established on the principle of cutting and dispersing power centre which is the basis of all mechanical waves in the water.

He said, 'We fix floating breakers (planks), in the sea, where tsunami waves are expected to happen. The breakers will help disperse powerful waves.'

He added, 'As we know tsunami is the most serious natural disaster in coastal areas, so this invention will help protect the coastal areas from destruction caused by tsunami.'

Sinani also won recognition at the Industrial Innovation Forum organised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

'I hope this idea will be adopted by the government or any other interested bodies,' he said.

Abdullaziz bin Hamdan al Kalbani, owner of Asrar al Aaredh company, came up with a project to recycle discarded wood from companies and factories to produce a type fuel to be used in coal production.

'I have used environmentally friendly machines and smoke filtration systems, all manufactured at my company, to reduce smoke emission in producing coal,' he said.

He has made agreements with companies and factories to dispose wood waste at his company instead of dropping it in landfills.

He added that the company, established two and a half years ago, produces about 288 tonnes of coals in a year.

The project won recognition in the Bahrain Entrepreneurship Awards. Kalbani said, 'Getting approval for the project from industrial estate was cumbersome. Luckily, the Minister of Commerce and Industry came to my rescue.

'I hope to develop my machines to work on solar energy. I am also looking at ways to make them work utilising waste water.'
