(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Morocco 's Independence Party (IP) announced Saturday that it would join government coalition headed by Abdelilah Benkirane.
After a series of meetings starting on October 17, between the Secretary-General of Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdelilah Benkirane and other party leaders, (IP) National Council held a meeting on Saturday 22 to discuss joining the new government coalition being formed by Abdelilah Benkirane.
Adel Benhamza, IP's spokesman said in a Facebook post that around a thousand members attended the special session of the party's National Council, which lasted for two hours, and they voted unanimously to participate in the government coalition.
Hamid Chabat, IP's Secretary-General, stated that the party's decision to take part in the government coalition stems from the necessity to align with other national parties. He added that it is 'too early to talk about the conditions of this participation.'
Benkirane pointed out on the same day that his party will form an alliance with both the Independence Party, and the Progress and Socialism Party (PPS), noting that the total number of three parties' seats in parliament is still insufficient to form a majority government.
Speaking at the special session of the PJD's National Council in Sale, Benkirane said that the the PJD would form an alliance with PPS and IP, despite the fact that the IP leader 'used to demean [the PJD]'.
In relation to the PJD's alliance with Popular Movement Party (MP), Benkirane said that the PJD 'does not have to wait for their decision,' adding that the other parties would made decision next week.
The total number of seats of three parties is 183, which is still 15 seats short of the minimum number necessary to form a coalition government.
Soon after the election results, Abdelilah Benkirane and Ilyas El Omari (his official name is El Omari) Secretary-General of Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) announced that they would not form an alliance with one another.
