UAE- Houthi attack on aid ship a grave violation: paper

ABU DHABI, 3rd October, 2016 (WAM) -- A UAE newspaper has said that the deliberate targeting of the UAE civilian ship, the HSV-2 Swift, by Houthi militia and the Saleh group is "a reprehensible terrorist act that violates international laws".

The ship, owned by UAE Marine National Dredging Company and leased by the Arab Coalition, was actually on a humanitarian mission to the city of Aden to deliver medical and relief aid, and evacuate wounded civilians in order to complete their treatment outside Yemen.

"The Yemeni government has rightly deemed this incident a crime and threat not only to the security of the Yemeni coast, but also a clear threat to the international security," explained The Gulf Today in an editorial on Monday.

"Terrorists in Yemen should realise that they will have no place to hide. The coalition has been contributing to the implementation of a series of charitable, development and reconstruction projects in Yemen, particularly in the areas of health, education, housing and public utilities. It has been making great efforts to restore the legitimacy, security and stability to all the cities and governorates of Yemen.

"The ongoing violence in Yemen is a result of the bloody coup and grave violations committed by the Houthi militias and forces loyal to defunct president Ali Abdullah Saleh against the Yemeni people.

"The UAE has been playing a compassionate role aiming to rebuild and develop Yemen and help brothers in Yemen restore their normal lives and to build schools, hospitals and entire infrastructure.

"The wishes of the Yemeni people and the legitimacy of the Yemeni government are of paramount importance when it comes to resolution of the conflict. The people of Yemen will surely treasure the support extended by the UAE. The only way out is for the Al Houthis to shun provocative actions.

"The attack on the ship is indeed a violation of humanity and a flagrant aggression against life. It has become abundantly clear that efforts to reach a political solution in Yemen have not been successful so far because of hostilities by the Houthis and the deposed government," concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
