(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Members of European Parliament Wednesday hailed Palestine's accession to the International Criminal Court as a historic moment in the Palestinian people's struggle for justice, freedom and peace, said an EP statement.
Chair of the EP's Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Assembly, Martina Anderson said, "today marks a very important step in the struggle for justice, freedom, and peace for the Palestinian people." "The ICC is one of the international legal instruments promoted by the European Union in order to foster values of accountability and peace. As stated in the EU's Common Position on the ICC, the EU is formally committed to advancing universal support for the ICC by promoting the widest possible participation in it," said the Irish MEP.
"In this context I and many other MEPs welcome Palestine's accession to the Rome Statute. I call on (EU High Representative) Federica Mogherini to also welcome Palestine's ICC membership," added Anderson.
Meanwhile, in a letter, 69 MEPs have called on Mogherini to join them in welcoming Palestine's ratification of the Rome Statute and its accession to the International Criminal Court, noted the statement.
