James Rodríguez responds after photo controversy involving president’s daughter
(MENAFN) Colombian national team captain James Rodríguez has addressed public criticism following claims that he ignored a photo request from President Gustavo Petro’s 17-year-old daughter during a World Cup send-off ceremony, according to reports.
The incident occurred at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, where Colombia’s national squad was officially farewelled ahead of the FIFA World Cup. President Petro and his daughter, Antonella Petro, attended the event and presented gifts to players during the ceremony.
Social media discussions erupted after video footage circulated online, with some users alleging that Rodríguez did not respond when Antonella reportedly asked for a photo. The clip sparked debate, with critics interpreting the moment as dismissive, while others argued the footage lacked sufficient context.
Following the backlash, Antonella Petro posted a video message encouraging national unity and support for the team. She described Rodríguez as a childhood idol, recalling his iconic 2014 World Cup goal against Uruguay.
“The first goal I ever celebrated in my life was yours, James,” she said. “I will never forget that volley against Uruguay in 2014. As a child, I wrote many letters to you. We must support our national team in unity. On the field, we are all one country.”
She also added that she still hopes to take a photo with the midfielder in the future and expressed support for the entire squad.
Rodríguez later responded directly on social media, writing to Antonella Petro: “Antonella, that photo will happen soon,” he said. “My jersey is yours as well. Just tell me where you would like me to send it. Thank you very much for the support you have given me and all my teammates. Everything has its time, and now is the time to unite behind our national team at the World Cup. See you soon.”
