Gunman Opens Fire At Kabul's Sarai Shahzada Currency Market

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Local sources reported a deadly shooting Sunday at Sarai Shahzada, the largest currency exchange market in Kabul, where a gunman allegedly opened fire on several people before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses said the attacker entered the market carrying a Kalashnikov rifle and fired multiple shots at traders and visitors inside the busy financial center.

Local sources confirmed that several people were killed or wounded, although exact casualty figures were not immediately available. Some witnesses suggested the incident may have been linked to an armed robbery attempt.

Taliban authorities had not officially commented on the shooting at the time of publication, while security forces were reportedly deployed to the area after the attack.

Sarai Shahzada is one of Afghanistan's most important financial hubs, handling large volumes of currency exchange and informal money transfers daily.

Afghanistan has witnessed rising concerns over urban crime and armed robberies in recent years as economic hardship, unemployment and poverty continue to deepen across the country.

Despite Taliban claims of improved nationwide security since returning to power in 2021, incidents involving shootings, bombings and criminal violence continue to be reported in major Afghanistan cities, including Kabul.
