Taiwan Is An Independent And Sovereign Country
By Caribbean News Global
TAIWAN / CANADA – The repeated false claims by the People's Republic of China (PRC) aim to downgrade Taiwan's sovereignty, take precedence with individuals and other countries to disseminate baseless rhetoric regarding the so-called“one China principle” and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 in an effort to distort the facts and mislead the international community, are“attempts at authoritarian expansionism.”
Taiwan is a vibrant democracy
Taiwan's 23.5 million people thrive in a robust, modern and civil society, a vibrant democracy, in a defined area of approximately \(36,193 \text{ km}^2\). This includes the main island of Taiwan, the Penghu archipelago, and several smaller island groups like Kinmen (Quemoy) and Matsu. (Ethnic population, unique language, own currency NT)
Taiwan has a functioning political and administrative structure through legitimate and democratic elections governed by President Lai Ching-te, the Legislative Yuan (113 legislators elected by the people), ministers of government and 17 ministries with the capacity to advance policy and enter into diplomatic relations and establish treaties with like-minded countries.
Taiwan has democratic governance (not military/dictators) in functional branches of government – legislative, executive, and judicial. Taiwan has a free press to inform the public and hold the government accountable.
Taiwan's government maintains that a formal declaration of independence is unnecessary because it already functions as an independent, sovereign democratic state with its own constitution, military, and government.
The recognition of these criteria represents international legitimacy of a sovereign state, with legal standing globally, not subject to the control of any outside power, fundamental elements of socialism and decorative authoritarian rule.
Taiwan is an independent and sovereign country
“The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign country, and neither it nor the PRC is subordinate to the other,” MOFA explains.“ These are undeniable objective facts and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. No attempts to denigrate Taiwan's sovereign status through erroneous narratives or joint statements can change this indisputable reality.”
MOFA has previously expressed great regret at the PRC government engaging in international collusion to further disseminate erroneous narratives that denigrate Taiwan's sovereignty and escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait. And that no number of falsehoods can alter the internationally recognised status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
“Taiwan will continue to enhance its self-defence capabilities, build whole-of-society defense resilience“No need to declare independence – We don't need it. We will not.”
Taiwan is a developed country with civil liberties, healthcare, human development, research and development institutions, rapid economic development and growth, technological advancement, and a robust defence mechanism ( The Democratic Shield TASA – Embrace the Unknown, Never Stop Exploring).
Some countries and their associates continue to wrongly state that Taiwan was an inalienable part of China.
MOFA Taiwan continues to advise that such“sentiments are baseless, and used to encourage the use of force against Taiwan, thus affecting regional peace and stability, undermining Taiwan's sovereignty and cloud international understanding.” Moreover,“neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People's Republic of China is subordinate to the other, and that the PRC has never governed Taiwan. No country has the right or ability to deny the objective fact of Taiwan's existence.”
International support
Diplomatic allies of Taiwan continue to advocate with their voice and with emphasis (European Parliament recommendation of 20 May 2026 to the Council, the Commission and the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (2025/2167(INI) for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organisations.
Many others maintain unofficial diplomatic ties through representative offices, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), and other institutions.
US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) publicly reiterated support for Taiwan on May 15, underlining that Congress had always been highly concerned about cross-strait issues and explicitly stating that the US position was that Taiwan needs to be independent and secure.
Other leading members of the US Senate and House of Representatives from both parties have stressed that the United States should fulfill its long-term commitments, promote arms sales, and continue to assist Taiwan in acquiring the necessary defensive capacities to strengthen deterrence.
Manufacturing and technology
Taiwan's Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( TSMC ) is leading on every front. Taiwan's first-quarter GDP growth reported a 39-year high of 13.69 percent. Taiwan's equity market overtook Canada to become the world's sixth-largest. TSMC accounts for more than 40 percent of the Taiwan Stock Exchange. TSMC has already begun to invest not only in the United States, but in Japan and in Germany.
The capability and quality of manufacturing in Taiwan is of a very high quality. This has now shifted from “Made in Taiwan” to “Made by Taiwan” and “Made with Taiwan.”
According to the statistics, from January to April 2026, 796 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with a total approved amount of USD 7,308,500,000 were recorded. This represents a 23.99 percent increase in the number of cases, and a 158.08 percent increase in the FDI amount compared with the same period in 2025. In the podcastIn global health governance, no one should be left behind. MOFA actively promotes global medical health cooperation and the model of healthcare-driven industrial growth.
Over the years, Taiwan has achieved outstanding results in global health governance (communicable disease prevention and control, universal health insurance, digital health) and assisting allies and friendly countries to enhance medical resilience through transnational medical health cooperation, public health capacity building, and other approaches. First, its semiconductor industry leads the world in R&D and has successfully developed chips that can withstand temperatures as low as -269 degrees Celsius, which are vital for quantum computing.
Second, manufacturers boast extensive experience in semiconductor production and advanced packaging; finally, local businesses excel at integrating different techniques and components into well-functioning systems.
Third, the MOEA has facilitated cooperation between Taiwanese companies and their international counterparts, including the New York state-based SEEQC Inc., and the California-headquartered Rigetti Computing Inc., to jointly develop quantum chips and low-temperature cooling systems, respectively.

So yes! Taiwan is an independent and sovereign country, a genuine democracy. Taiwan's strength relies very much on the trust that has been built with allies, friends and in business.

A stable democracy and democratic institutions;
Taiwan produces approximately 90 percent of the world's most advanced semiconductor chips, and has a supply chain competitiveness;
Investments and market capitalisation;
Human capital, innovation, research and development.
Industrial adaptability;
Taiwan is a powerhouse with a high degree of stateness. (Taiwan Country Report 2026 ).
Taiwan has proven to be a trusted team maker that will not copy business secrets and cause nations to be indebted, but will (and has) add value to products and the development of the whole of society, via democratic values.
MOFA continues to deepen relations with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries through integrated diplomacy, public-private partnerships, and Taiwan's technological strengths. Taiwan reiterates that it will continue to deepen cooperation with all like-minded countries to staunchly defend democracy. Regardless of any economic coercion or diplomatic bullying that Taiwan might face, it will steadfastly maintain its established position, actively engage with the world, and bolster national resilience.
Moreover, Taiwan is willing to collaborate with all nations that support freedom, democracy, and human rights and work to curb authoritarian expansionism, staunchly safeguard the peace and security of the Taiwan Strait, uphold freedom, prosperity, and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
Thus, irrespective of unfounded perspectives, Taiwan is a country with many successful innovations and a leader on the global stage. Taiwan is a successful country by design, enabling advanced technology, democracy, research and development. It's a strategy in action!
