Trump Administration Clarifies Green Card Policy

(MENAFN) The Trump administration attempted to calm worries among immigrants and employers regarding a recent adjustment to green card procedures, emphasizing that the change will not block eligible applicants from securing permanent residency in the United States, according to media accounts released Saturday.

This reassurance followed unease sparked by new instructions from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The guidance raised fears that hundreds of thousands of applicants might be compelled to leave the country and finalize their cases at American consulates abroad, CBS News reported.

The earlier directive seemed to restrict the use of “adjustment of status,” a process enabling certain immigrants sponsored by family members or employers to remain in the US while pursuing permanent residency.

After criticism from immigration attorneys, business organizations, and advocacy groups, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) clarified that the guidance simply reiterates “longstanding law and policy.”

“The policy will not prevent any alien from obtaining a green card who legitimately and properly qualify,” CBS quoted DHS as saying. The department further noted that the change “will have no noticeable impact on highly qualified applicants and skilled professionals who have followed the law.”

However, Lynden Melmed, former chief counsel at USCIS, argued that the administration’s latest explanation still narrows the scope of the original directive. He suggested that the policy could impose extra challenges on applicants and attorneys by demanding additional documentation to justify completing the process within the United States.
