Pressure Builds on Starmer as Labour MPs Demand Exit Timeline
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is confronting growing unrest inside the Labour Party, with reports that up to 70 Members of Parliament have either called for his resignation or demanded that he set out a clear timeline for leaving office.
The internal pressure has intensified following a series of disappointing election results for Labour across different parts of the United Kingdom, prompting renewed debate over the party’s direction and leadership under Starmer.
While acknowledging shortcomings in his government’s performance, Starmer maintained that his administration has made the correct major policy decisions and insisted it would overcome criticism.
He said his government had “got the big political choices right,” and pledged to prove critics wrong despite rising speculation about his political future.
According to reports, senior government figures have also privately expressed concern. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among several ministers said to have encouraged the prime minister to consider outlining a planned exit strategy from Downing Street.
The growing tension comes after Labour suffered notable setbacks in recent elections across the UK. In Wales, the party endured a historic defeat in the Senedd elections, while in Scotland, the Scottish National Party secured another term in power in the Scottish Parliament.
These elections, held across Scotland, Wales, and 136 English local authorities, represented the largest nationwide electoral test for Labour since its landslide general election victory in 2024.
At the same time, the far-right Reform UK party continued to expand its influence, gaining more than 1,450 council seats and building on earlier electoral gains, adding further pressure on Labour’s leadership as it faces a shifting political landscape.
