Israeli Forces Destroy Monastery, School in Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) Israeli forces have torn down a monastery along with a school operated by the Sisters of the Holy Savior in the town of Yaroun in southern Lebanon, according to reports on Friday.

The educational facility “was considered one of the most prominent educational institutions in the region,” having served thousands of students over the years from multiple communities within the Bint Jbeil area, as stated by reports. The destruction of the site was described as “a major loss at both the educational and social levels.”

Since early March, Israel has carried out a sustained military campaign in Lebanon that has resulted in more than 2,600 fatalities and forced over one million people to flee their homes, according to reports.

Although a temporary 10-day truce that started on April 17 was later prolonged until May 17, reports indicate that Israeli actions have continued, including repeated air raids and the leveling of residential buildings.

In addition, Israeli authorities maintain what they describe as a "buffer zone" in southern Lebanon, saying it is intended to stop attacks by Hezbollah. A previous ceasefire arrangement had also been put in place in November 2024.
