Trump Says US Forces Seized Iranian Cargo Ship in Gulf of Oman
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says American naval forces have intercepted and disabled an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman as it attempted to breach a US naval blockade, according to reports.
As stated by reports, the ship, identified as the TOUSKA, was stopped by the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance after its crew allegedly ignored repeated warnings to halt. Trump said on his social media platform that “Our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room.”
He added that the vessel is under US Treasury sanctions for previous “illegal” activity and that American forces are inspecting its cargo.
According to reports citing US Central Command, the ship was traveling through the northern Arabian Sea at around 17 knots en route to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas when it was intercepted. The military said warnings were issued over a six-hour period before the destroyer fired on the vessel, disabling it.
As stated by reports, footage released by US Central Command shows the warship issuing warnings before opening fire with its MK 45 naval gun system. Helicopter-borne Marines were later deployed to board and secure the vessel after it was immobilized.
