India to Place Large Order for BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles

(MENAFN) India is moving to significantly expand its missile capabilities, with plans to place a large order for BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, media reported.

The Indian Army is seeking to acquire a long-range variant of the weapon to bolster its arsenal, the news agency said, citing Defense Ministry officials.

Media added that the Defense Ministry is expected to approve the Indian Army’s proposed purchase at a meeting scheduled in the near future.

BrahMos is a joint creation of India’s Defense Research and Development Organization and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya rocket design bureau, which manufactures the Oniks missile.

The missile, produced by BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd.—named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers—can be launched from ships, submarines, land platforms, and air-based missile systems.

Earlier this month, Indonesia finalized a deal to acquire BrahMos missiles, signaling growing international interest.

Looking ahead, the next stage of the BrahMos program could include the co-development of a missile system inspired by Russia’s Zircon hypersonic missile.

India has emerged as the world’s second-largest weapons importer, accounting for 8.3% of global arms shipments from 2021 to 2025, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

New Delhi has traditionally depended heavily on Moscow for military equipment and technology. Both nations have indicated plans for new projects that would include technology transfers across aviation, naval, and missile platforms, supporting India’s push to expand domestic manufacturing under its ‘Make in India’ initiative.
