US Envoy Says Syria Becoming “Laboratory” for New Regional Diplomacy
(MENAFN) US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack has described Syria as a “laboratory for a new regional alignment of diplomacy, integration and hope,” according to reports citing his remarks on social media.
His comments followed a meeting in Damascus with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, where discussions reportedly focused on political developments in Syria and broader regional dynamics.
According to reports, Barrack said that under the current leadership in Damascus and with the involvement of Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Syria has made what he described as notable progress in recent developments.
He added that the country could represent emerging opportunities for economic and political advancement, framing future prospects as potentially significant for long-term stability in the region.
The meeting, held at the People’s Palace in Damascus, was also reported by Syrian state media, which said discussions included regional developments and potential avenues for expanding economic cooperation.
According to reports, the envoy’s remarks reflect a broader diplomatic framing of Syria as a testing ground for evolving regional engagement models involving multiple regional and international actors.
