Houthis Signal Potential Closure of Bab al-Mandeb
(MENAFN) A Houthi official in Yemen has not dismissed the possibility of shutting down the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, as tensions escalate between Iran, the US, and Israel in the war’s second month.
On Saturday, the Iran-backed Yemeni group carried out missile strikes toward Israel, marking their first such attack since the US and Israel initiated a joint offensive against Tehran last month.
"We are in joint coordination with our brothers in Iran, Lebanon, and Iraq," Mohammed Mansour, deputy information minister in the Houthi-led government, told a broadcaster on Saturday.
He explained that the Houthis entered the conflict “to provide support to our brothers in Iran who are fighting epic battles” alongside the Lebanese organization Hezbollah.
Mansour added that the Houthis' engagement “aims to increase pressure on Israel and the US.”
“Every step we take is carefully calculated to be effective and to increase the pressure on Israel and the US,” he emphasized.
According to the Houthi official, Yemen “bears a moral, religious, and humanitarian responsibility toward Iran, Hezbollah, and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces,” describing the alliance as “primarily aiming to support Palestine.”
Mansour further stated that the Houthi movement possesses multiple strategies to exert pressure on Israel and the US amid the ongoing war with Iran.
