Trump Applauds ICE Presence at Airports to Ensure Order, Safety
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday voiced strong approval for the recent deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at major airports across the country, portraying the step as essential for maintaining safety and control.
"I sent ICE to the airports yesterday, and they have been so great," he said at the National Republican Congressional Committee's annual fundraising dinner.
According to statements made during the event, federal agents were sent to airports starting Monday as tensions continue between the White House and congressional Democrats over budget issues.
Trump emphasized that the personnel have been performing exceptionally well in their duties.
Trump said the agents are doing "such an unbelievable job" at the airports.
He also indicated that further measures could be taken if deemed necessary.
"If we have to, we're going to send in the National Guard if we need to," he added.
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are pushing for significant changes within ICE before agreeing to allocate full funding to its overseeing body, the Department of Homeland Security.
This demand follows earlier incidents in which ICE agents shot and killed two American demonstrators during intensified immigration enforcement efforts, as stated by reports.
Trump criticized Democrats over the funding impasse, accusing them of refusing to support resources for airport security staff.
“You have to remember that the radical left Democrats need to get DHS back and open immediately,” he added.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated that Democrats have consistently called for reforms to ICE.
"If anyone is slowing down negotiation and hurting TSA workers, it's the Republican leadership who did not include one single reform," Schumer said on the Senate floor.
