China Urges Halt to US-Israel Strikes Targeting Iran

(MENAFN) China on Saturday called for an "immediate" halt to military operations after the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes against Iran, as Tehran vowed a forceful counterresponse and the Middle East braced for further escalation.

Beijing's Foreign Ministry voiced "high concern" over the strikes, underscoring its insistence on "respect" for Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

"China calls for an immediate stop of the military actions, no further escalation of the tense situation, resumption of dialogue and negotiation, and efforts to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East," the ministry said in a statement posted on X.

The declaration came as explosions tore through Tehran and Israel announced it had carried out "preemptive" strikes against Iran. US President Donald Trump separately confirmed that Washington had launched "major combat operations" in Iran — a dramatic intervention that sent shockwaves across the region.

Tehran swiftly condemned the strikes as naked military aggression, characterizing them as a direct violation of its sovereignty and a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

Invoking its right to self-defense under international law, Iran acknowledged it had pursued diplomacy in a bid to avert open conflict — but signaled that window had closed. Tehran declared that "the time has now come to defend the homeland," and warned that its armed forces would respond in a "decisive and powerful manner."

The strikes mark a severe deterioration in an already volatile standoff, with global powers now increasingly drawn into a confrontation carrying profound consequences for regional and international security.
