South Korea’s Leader Says Mideast Peace Non-Negotiable

(MENAFN) With a fragile two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran set to expire at dawn Wednesday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung declared Monday that restoring peace and stability in the Middle East was "crucial" for both global security and the world economy — speaking alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a landmark bilateral summit in New Delhi.

The meeting marked the first visit by a South Korean head of state to India in eight years, with Lee arriving Sunday for a three-day stay that yielded sweeping agreements spanning trade, technology, and geopolitical alignment.

Prime Minister Modi and "I exchanged views on the recent events unfolding in the Middle East and agreed that restoring stability and peace in the Middle East is crucial to global security and the economy," Lee said, noting that both nations had committed to maintaining close collaboration in "addressing" international issues.

The remarks carry urgent resonance. The U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran — launched Feb. 28 — has claimed more than 3,300 lives, and the clock is ticking on a ceasefire agreement that expires in a matter of days.

Modi, for his part, framed the partnership in broader civilizational terms: "In this era of global tensions, India and (South) Korea together convey a message of peace and stability."

$50 Billion Trade Target and a Digital Bridge
Beyond their shared foreign policy posture, the two leaders unveiled an ambitious economic blueprint. Bilateral trade — currently hovering at approximately $27 billion, Modi noted — is targeted to nearly double to $50 billion by 2030.

The prime minister struck an optimistic tone on the partnership's long-term trajectory, saying the nations are laying a "foundation for the success stories of the next decade."

Anchoring that vision is a new technology initiative designed to deepen cooperation across emerging industries. "To deepen partnerships in AI (artificial intelligence), semiconductors, and information technology, we are launching the India-Korea digital bridge," Modi announced — a move that positions both nations at the forefront of the next wave of global technological competition.
